This list was originally published on December 9, It has been updated to include the latest movies in the growing queer Christmas-movie canon.

Not too long ago, Diverse people who wanted to glimpse themselves represented in holiday movies could either (a) pretend or (b) settle for a second-rate film with a queer nature who had very few lines, ambition, or development.

Early in the contemporary queer holiday canon, ’s The Family Stone, which stars gay icon Sarah Jessica Parker as a (shocker) snobby Brand-new Yorker spending the holidays at her boyfriend’s family home, became a queer hit for its B-plot gay couple with ambitions to adopt a baby. And while the film is still worth an annual watch, so much more has happened in seasonal cinema since SJP’s iconic spilled-strata scene with matriarch Diane Keaton. That is, gay and lesbian Christmas movies actually center queer people now — queer holiday revelers crus

Spoiler Alert Review: Create the Yuletide Gay

It’s no spoiler attentive that gay people always die at the end of movies. I can hardly complain, since Black characters always die first. We at least earn to go along for the journey. However, the inevitability of dying isn’t always linked to the tragedy that too often defines queer narratives. Happiness and love, fleeting as they may be, are welcome in whatever dose—brief or long—one can get.

The bittersweet inevitability of love start and lost too soon hangs over the Christmas weepie Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies. The film adapts Michael Ausiello’s memoir of the same designate, which recounts his relationship with his late husband, Kit. Thanks to Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge, respectively, Michael and Kit’s all-too-short romance is a touching, funny, and frankly humane glance at love and life.

Michael, however, has a weird connection with romance thanks to his serve at TV Guide. Reared on cheerful endings in shows featuring almost exclusively heterosexual couples, he has some cognitive dissonance with the fact that he’s a catch. His expertise, t

Make the Yuletide Gay: Navigating the Holidays as a Queer Person

On Thursday, December 5th, my church hosted its first-ever Holiday Blues service, a time for members and guests to sit honestly with the grief they feel around the holidays.

Some had defeated a loved one earlier this year and were navigating the holidays without that special person for the first time. Others were grieving the impairment of relationships, career transitions, estrangement from family, and things shared only between themselves and God.

During the service, we took occasion to light candles on the altar to honor the people we’d confused or other griefs we carry.  As I approached the altar, my heart was heavy with relational grief–old wounds, to be sure, but still painful all the same.

I lit a candle for each member of my bio-family and one for the surrogate family I had in college, who cut me out of their life after I came out. It has been years since I have talked with any of them, but the holidays always seem to stir up those griefs I assume will someday stop hurting.

Maybe.

The holidays are complicated for me
