The Bear Culture

The bear movement began in the mid s as a rebellion against the dominant queer culture which idolised chiseled gym body as the standard of gay male beauty. If you didn&#;t have your private parts shaved, had hair on your chest, back or legs ,you would be someone who did not care about their appearance. Bears are different. They appreciate to be hairy everywhere. They don`t use colognes. While India does not have a bear culture, New York City and San Francisco do.
Bears can be identified with three of their characteristics

Tenyearsago, I served as a judge for the International Mr Bear contest, part of a large gay/bi men's event called International Bear Rendezvous that was organized by Bears of San Francisco. Earlier this year, I served as a judge for the Mr Bear Boston challenge held at The Passage Bar, sponsored by a relatively new bearclub, Massbearz.
Bear contests, like their components in the queer Imperial Court and leather scenes, often are held as fundraisers for the local bearclub and charities, creating essentially male beauty pageants performed by and for gay, bi, and gender non-conforming men in the bear community.
I cannot help but compare my experience of Bear contests with my observations of a similar men's competition I witnessed earlier this year, the East Coast Beard & Mustache Championship held in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. The "Mr Beard" event is featured on the IFC series
