Seven Words That Have A Totally Different Meaning In Gay-Land

There are many a buzzword out there. We love them, these small words and phrases. Favor whispering a secret, it can make you sense like you fit in, and it’s no distinct in Gay Land.

You can find examples of this everywhere. When I was writing for a PR firm, I felt utterly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of jargon out there. What’s an Angel Investor? What does SEO stand for? Professionals and PR people have been using buzzwords for years, either to shorten a phrase they use every day or to refer to something only those in-the-know would understand. And it can make you feel utterly uninformed.

So here it is, for those of you that have been using these phrases for years and need a refresher, or if you’re still in the closet (come on Out The water’s lovely!), or maybe you’re straight and just curious. About the words, I mean. Although the other kind is great, too

What Does "Gay" Mean?

There is not one right answer

Many educators are unsure how to respond when a student asks you what does lgbtq+ mean. It is better to seek to answer than to respond with silence or evade the question.

Practice diverse responses with colleagues, just as you practice other things that you yearn to learn. Figure out what you feel comfortable saying.

Responses will vary by age and developmental stage of the student. Your comfort in answering these questions will position a welcoming tone in your class and school community.

Keep it simple

An reply can be as simple as: “‘Gay’ means two people of the similar gender who affectionate each other – two women or two men.” Attempt to answer the question honestly without overloading a scholar with information. Throughout elementary school a student’s ability to understand what “gay” means and what your explanation means may increase with development.

Today I found out how &#;gay&#; came to intend &#;homosexual&#;.

The word &#;gay&#; seems to have its origins around the 12th century in England, derived from the Old French pos &#;gai&#;, which in shift was probably derived from a Germanic word, though that isn&#;t completely known.  The word&#;s original definition meant something to the effect of &#;joyful&#;, &#;carefree&#;, &#;full of mirth&#;, or &#;bright and showy&#;.

However, around the early parts of the 17th century, the word began to be associated with immorality.  By the mid 17th century, according to an Oxford dictionary definition at the time, the meaning of the word had changed to mean  &#;addicted to pleasures and dissipations.  Often euphemistically: Of loose and immoral life&#;.  This is an extension of one of the original meanings of &#;carefree&#;, meaning more or less uninhibited.

Fast-forward to the 19th century and the word gay referred to a woman who was a prostitute and a gay man was someone who slept with a lot of women (ironically enough), often prostitutes. Also at this moment, the phrase &#;gay it&#; mea
