Definitive "Gay" Movie List?
Some of you didn't read my whole post. I don't just want gay-themed movies, I want movies that are beloved by gay audiences are considered MUST-SEE'S by the general gay society at large. Like the Sound of Music and Mommie Dearest. Make sense?
Also, play nice. Especially you, digi. I'm sorry that you think all of these movies suck, but I'm still interested in seeing some of them.
Movie thoughts:
I may attempt and edit the first post to do a comprehensive list, if I have time. And I might bold the ones I have seen, if anyone cares.
I liked the Birdcage. Sure, it was fairly stereotypical and sterile, but it's entertaining. And I don't reflect there's anything in it that's offensive. It doesn't do much to divorce down stereotypes, or to further the gay produce. But come on! Gene Hackman in drag? Fine stuff.
Can't believe I didn't put Rocky Horror in my original list. D'oh!
Is Torch Song Trilogy the Matthew Broderick/Harvey Firestein one? I want to see that
American International Pictures is a name well famous to geeks like me who love films from the 50s to the 70s, particularly low budget exploitation pictures. Helmed by a sales manager and a lawyer, James H. Nicholson and Samuel Z. Arkoff, the company also employed Roger Corman, notorious clip producer known for his cheap production values. It was Arkoff who was savvy enough to devise a formula where he created films targeting males in their late teens, and the company made a lot of wealth off of horror and sci-fi films. People are always reading subtexts into horror films, like when people talk about "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and say "That was really about McCarthyism, man!" I think "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is really about alien pods that duplicate people, but the subtext of not entity able to trust people is a powerful one, lending the movie its ominous weight.
The AIP horror movies echoed some of the identical sentiments, but there was a new plot device in the form of hypnosis. Just like "radiation" had the potential

MorePat Rocco's shorts are kinda fascinating not just as an act of self-documentation, but as a gay twist on the nudie cutie formula -- lots of leery, innocent nudity presented free from any sort of overt sexual context. A lot of it feels samely (especially for a collection that runs successfully over 90 minutes), but the concluding short -- a cruising scenario shot surreptitiously in Disneyland -- is still thrilling 50 years later.
Fun fact: this collection has the very first male-male onscreen kiss.
A collection of concise films by queer film pioneer Pat Rocco. The Groovy Guy, Boy On the Run, The Game (with Making Of), Memories, A Very Special Friend (I believe this one had the first male-male peck ever screened for the public), Leonardo Da Jason, Early to Bed, and Discovery. Half of them are about two men rendezvous and spending a nice day together, which are very pleasant. The finest of
