LA-based, openly gay filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz, 48, makes documentaries. You might have seen his film Tab Hunter Confidential(now streaming on Netflix).

Schwarz trim his professional teeth working for mythical doc duo Robert Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (who won Oscars for Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt and The Times of Harvey Milk). I met him years ago when I was in motion picture school and spent a semester interning on The Celluloid Closet(). Schwarz had the enviable career of listening to and transcribing star interviews with people like Cher, Susan Sarandon and Tony Curtis (who said some pretty gnarly things about active with Marilyn Monroe on the Billy Wilder classic Some Like It Hot).

I published an initial interview with Schwarz back in September about his modern documentary The Fabulous Allan Carr, but below are further excerpts from our phone Q&A.

Carr just completed a national and international movie festival run this past weekend and Schwarz told me additional distribution on cable and via streaming is organism worked out now

Emmy Award-winning Producer Director Jeffrey Schwarz has amassed an extraordinary résumé of documenting remarkable LGBTQ+ pioneers and crucial moments in lgbtq+ history. This interview was conducted over Zoom.

In the 80’s and 90’s a discussion of creature gay wasn’t really reflected in movies other than as a joke or something to be ashamed about. Obviously now things have changed, but when I came out, I was always searching for people to look up to and follow in their footsteps. “Vito” Russo was one of those people. Hi

There’s no ask that when Patrik-Ian Polk’s series “Noah’s Arc” premiered on Logo 20 years ago, it was a groundbreaking creation. The story of a group of Black gay men and their wonderful friendship. The titular arc was that of the cute main character, Noah (Darryl Stephens), and his close-knit circle of friends, including Chance played by gay performer Doug Spearman. This compelling and loving fraternity may, in fact, be what brought viewers back repeatedly, including a movie, “Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom,” as well as the “Noah’s Arc” short, and now, a new full-length feature “Noah’s Arc: The Movie,” debuting on Paramount+ on June In the movie, filled with matching measures of laughs and tears, Chance, who has faced a devastating decrease, finds his dependable friends there, ready to back and comfort him at a moment’s notice. I had the pleasure of speaking with Spearman the morning of the streaming premiere of “Noah’s Arc: The Movie.”
