Glossary of Terms

Many Americans refrain from talking about sexual orientation and gender identity or verbalization because it feels taboo, or because they’re terrified of saying the mistaken thing. 

This glossary was written to help give people the words and meanings to help make conversations easier and more pleasant. LGBTQ+ people use a variety of terms to identify themselves, not all of which are included in this glossary. Always listen for and respect a person’s self identified terminology.

Ally | A phrase used to describe someone who is actively supportive of LGBTQ+ people. It encompasses straight and cisgender allies, as well as those within the Homosexual community who support each other (e.g., a woman loving woman who is an ally to the bisexual community).

Asexual | Often called “ace” for short, asexual refers to a complete or partial lack of sexual attraction or lack of interest in sexual task with others. Asexuality exists on a spectrum, and asexual people may exposure no, little or conditional sexual attraction.

Biphobia | The fear and hatred of, or discomfort with

Asexual

The lack of a sexual attraction or longing for other people.

Bigender

A gender identity which can be literally translated as ‘two genders’ or ‘double gender’. These two gender identities could be male and female, but could also encompass non-binary identities.

Bisexual

A person emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to more than one sex, gender or gender identity though not necessarily simultaneously, in the same way or to the same degree.

Cisgender

A person whose gender culture is aligned with their sex assigned at birth.

Demigender

A person who wears clothing, accessories, jewellery or make-up not traditionally or stereotypically associated with their assigned sex. People who crossdress may be cozy with their assigned sex, although some people may depart on to name as transgender.

Drag Queen

A performer, typically one who was assigned male at birth, whose act involves a stylized and exaggerated interpretation of femininity that plays with stereotypical gender themes.

It’s amazing that gender — something many people reflection was a simple concept — is actually so personal, nuanced, and complex. For that reason, it’s totally OK if this list is a lot to digest!

Just remember: Gender is an essential part of health and well-being for everyone.

Because our weekly theme is about gender, let’s seek and make a list of different gender identities.

I am going to form the second post in this a wiki announce for people to combine on to, because I certainly don’t know enough to make a list about this myself. Build sure not to overwrite other people’s edits and be respectful of what other people have written. We can also communicate about specific gender identities in the thread, especially ones that you don’t know about or don’t identify with and hopefully we can all support each other come to a better understanding about this.
