Annie: I moved to Asheville two years ago and have loved my time in this gay jewel nestled in the Navy Ridge Mountains. There’s an unofficial slogan of “Asheville: 10, Lesbians Can’t Be Wrong&#; that has rumored origins from a past Indigo Girls concert. When I moved here from a huge city I anticipated needing to readjust my expectations of how much stuff would be going on all the time, but so far that has not been the case. Asheville is small, but it is busy!

Most of the city is incredibly dog-friendly and if you or your pup loves to hike or brunch with you, you’ll be blown away by the options. Due to the relatively large presence of LGBTQ folks in Asheville, many of my recommendations below are queer owned/operated! There’s also a sizeable living wage push here in Asheville, and many businesses are Living Wage Certified (they usually own a sticker in the window!).

Brighde: I’ve been living in Asheville for the past three months and I gotta say, I’m into it. It’s a short-lived city full of odds and ends (and some queers) planted in the mountains. Like everywhere else, this p

LGBT Asheville

Asheville is a gay-friendly small city. Period.

According to the latest United States census, the Asheville area has 83% more queer woman , gay bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) identified people than the typical American city or town. Another study, also based on census results, found that Bun-combe County (with identical sex couples per 1,) and Asheville ( per 1,) are the most gay-friendly county and municipality in the state of North Carolina, on a per-capita basis well ahead of places like Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. In , the gay-oriented publication, The Advocate, ranked Asheville as the “12th gayest city in America.” Atlanta was ranked #1.

LGBTQ+ visitors increasingly are discovering Asheville, with its great natural beau-ty, original dining and drinking spots, heavy-duty gallery, arts and crafts scene, interesting shops and numerous gay-owned or gay-welcoming B&Bs and inns and businesses.

You are likely to see a number of openly lesbian and gay couples around town, es-pecially Downtown and in West Asheville.

Fragmentary seems like the most appropriate synonyms to describe the history and society of oppressed people, and especially the LGBTQ+ community. Our heritage and identity has often gone undocumented for anxiety of unintentionally providing information that could lead to unwanted trouble from our oppressors. Call it a fail secure, if you will, but the finish result was/is a huge loss of LGBTQ+ history prior to the s.

In other instances, our history was often deemed as insignificant or unworthy of being saved by those in a position of dominance to make decisions about historical preservation. As late as the mid s I can still recall the shock I felt when I was informed by a periodical librarian at the Atlanta Fulton County Public Library that copies of locally produced gay and lesbian publications were thrown away when each new edition arrived, unlike the mainstream straight newspapers and magazines, which were typically archived.

Besides Asheville’s thriving music scene, its proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains has always been an attraction for outdoor adventurers. There are many options for cycling, hiking, kayaking, and even stand-up paddle boarding.

The city has also not-so-quietly been making a name for itself in the food and guzzle scene. It’s got a handful of James Beard nominees who call the place home, and there are currently 50 breweries in the area with more on the way.

Locals aren’t bragging when they say the town has pretty much everything a person could crave , and that includes many safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ traveler.

While adorable much everywhere in Asheville is welcoming, this mentor highlights places that are specifically queer-friendly, from LGBTQ+-owned businesses to venues that host events catered to the community.
