A week or two after origin my online dating journey, I was matched with “Mel,” who lived about an hour away from me. We started chatting on a dating app in the middle of September. Soon after, we started texting. Then we spoke on the smartphone. Eventually, Mel was texting me every morning.

- proximity: how near you are to someone and how often you see them
- similarity: how like you they are, for example, do you share similar interests or values
- reciprocity: we’re more likely to like people who like us
- physical attractiveness: are they pleasing to look at?
- familiarity: we like people who seem easy to us

Sexuality is, of course, one of the many things that influence romantic attraction in terms of who will be attracted to who. Heterosexual women, for example, will be attracted to men romantically.
