Netflix’s first gay holiday rom-com

When the holiday season rolls around, I find myself pulled towards the lure of Hallmark-esque Christmas movies. They’re simply irresistible with charming small towns, cheesy romances, and holiday cheer.

Netflix has a expansive range of original holiday movies out, and heaps of them are released every November. While I haven’t seen all of them, there certainly are a couple of gems.

Of course, it’s a fair critique to utter that these types of movies are very formulaic and cliche. With unrealistic plotlines and predictable twists, the movies are by no means masterpieces. The once brooding love interest will always find the true meaning of Christmas, and any threats to the holiday will be miraculously resolved. However, despite the cheesiness, there is something so lighthearted and fun about these movies that is hard to ignore.

With Christmas approaching, I set out to watch a new movie.

Number 8 on Netflix’s top ten charts was “Single All The Way,” released December 2nd, The movie centers on two same-sex attracted best friends trying to navigate the holidays back ho

&#;Single All the Way&#; Makes the Yuletide Gay in Netflix&#;s Cheesy Holiday Rom-com

It is a revelation universally acknowledged that a gay bloke in possession of a television in December, must be in want of a cheesy Christmas movie. Whether cinephile, theater lover, or &#;Drag Race&#; connoisseur, everyone enjoys something silly to half watch while wrapping presents — and no gay can resist the celestial decadence that is Jennifer Coolidge. As thoroughly unproblematic a same-sex attracted Christmas movie as there ever was, unfortunately &#;Single All the Way&#; doesn&#;t leave room for much else.

Led by twinkle-eyed &#;Ugly Betty&#; star Michael Urie, &#;Single All the Way&#; follows a perpetually single bloke, Peter, who brings his best comrade Nick (Philemon Chambers) home for the holidays. The schedule is to reveal Peter&#;s fa

A year after Hallmark and Lifetime debuted their first holiday movies with queer lead characters, Netflix has answered the calls for greater inclusion in its end-of-year programming with Single All the Way, an unabashed celebration of gender non-conforming love set against the backdrop of a classic Christmas movie.

Directed by the Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer and written by Chad Hodge, Single All the Way centers on a perpetually single dude named Peter (Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie) who convinces his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to link him and his family for the holidays and pretend that they’re in a romantic relationship. But when his mother Carole (Hocus Pocus’ Kathy Najimy) sets him up on a blind date with her handsome trainer James (Brothers and Sisters’ Luke Macfarlane), Peter finds himself caught in an unexpected love triangle. In addition to Najimy, Barry Bostwick and Jennifer Robertson, the supporting cast includes the effervescent Jennifer Coolidge, who plays Peter’s aunt Sandy.
