It’s engaging, isn’t it, how a lot of the rebellion is “my bank shouldn’t be getting involved in this virtue-signalling nonsense”?

I am disabled. Autistic. I watch autism used for marketing and ‘pity porn’ every single day. I also see the companies that are actually doing something positive to accommodate autistic people, and promoting this in their marketing. And the response is always massively positive from random bystanders in either of those situations. No matter what the business aims, they’re amazing for making people aware, even if they’re not actually helping us in any way.

And yet when the marginalised group is the LGBT+ community, there is so much negativity. Despite the fact that many, many LGBT+ individuals feel very happy with this consciousness campaign, people who it doesn’t actually affect always seem to take personal offence.

Meanwhile, I can stake my disability inconveniences the average person on the street far more than my sexuality (or lack of it) does, and there would be outrage if people said a bad word against that.

Pride Month, with a cynical eye, could be seen as a second of the year when big corporations slap a rainbow on their adverts. But there is so much more to identity festival than a brightly coloured flag. 

Pride is a celebration. A festival of equality and visibility, of self-affirmation, and a look help at the struggles the LGBTQIA+ community faced in the past. It is a celebration that, for many, continues through our day-to-day lives, and as we travel the world. 

Since coming out myself, as a trans woman and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, the world of travel is a dramatically different minefield (not least because my travel luggage is now twice as heavy). Navigating the laws and policies and restrictions can be a migraine of an issue, and those doom-and-gloom news articles don’t help.
